Message to Parents from Police & KPR
Recently, Durham Regional Police Service and school principals have been receiving questions related to incidents involving suspicious persons in Durham. The purpose of this message is to assure all parents that police and the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPR) are working together on this matter, for the safety of our children.
It is important to note that, while the number of suspicious persons reports has increased, none of the reports involved any physical contact. The reports have involved unwanted comments or trespass on property. While it is common for the number of such reports to increase after alerts have been issued, both police and the schools are taking each report seriously. School staff have reminded students of safety rules, and encouraged them to notify an adult they trust immediately if they encounter anyone who makes them feel uncomfortable or suspicious.
As always, police, the school board and schools are sharing all information on the matter. Police are monitoring the situation closely. If there is a risk to public safety and further action is needed, schools will be alerted and will, in turn, notify parents immediately. This will be done through letters home, notices posted on school websites and, if the situation warrants, recorded messages sent home to parents. We also encourage you to visit www.drps.ca for updates from Durham Police.
Please rest assured that the safety of our children remains the highest priority.
Catherine Foy, Superintendent, Student Achievement, KPR District School Board
Insp. Rolf Kluem, Officer in Charge, East Division, Durham Regional Police Service
